Is Democracy Doomed To Fail?
Can Any Democracy Truly Succeed?Has Any Democracy Succeeded?
The following statement is commonly attributed to one Alexander Tytler a Scottish born English lawyer and writer who lived from 1747 – 1813. While there is no end of debate about Tytler being the author these arguments are as much a red herring as anything else.
Regardless of authorship, the observation would seem most accurate and capable of explaining the current difficulties world leaders are having wrestling with the result of fiscal policy driven more by self interest than anything else.
Disputed Quote:
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.
This may well explain why what we like to believe is a functioning democracy in our country is already slowly evolving into a dictatorship, which we think we have duly elected.
