SYNERGY OF COLOUR AND FORM
Nicole Hennessey artist
Nicole Hennessey was born in Bermuda and raised in the West Island of Montreal. Before settling down on Vancouver Island with her husband, a bush pilot and their two young children, she lived on Baffin Island. Nicole says, “I am a true Island girl.”
Nicole has been drawing, painting and involved with all kinds of art forms and crafts since she was nine years old. “I knew, even then that I had to paint and draw. Nicole pursued her education at the Montreal School of Fine Arts and Sir George Williams University, now Concordia, under the tutelage of Roy Kiyooka. “This was a turning point in my life as a painter. He made me realize that technique and perspective are all fine and good, but one must paint with heart. This pleased me to no end as I break every rule in the book.” In 1975, Nicole went with her husband to Niger Africa, her experiences during her time there reinforced her passion for color and shape. “The strong and bold colors in the environment and in the beautiful materials they made for their clothes were exciting and vibrant.” She continues, to this day, to learn new techniques and styles. “I am learning the Jhostovo Russian method of painting. I am absolutely in love with this style.”
Nicole is driven by shape, sharp contrasts and lots of color, which is why she loves Vancouver Island and B.C. “My involvement with the Nanaimo Arts Council offers a wonderful opportunity to meet other artists and have my work displayed.”
There will be an opening reception for SYNERGY OF COLOR AND FORM by Nicole Hennessey on Saturday, February 7th from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Nanaimo Arts Council gallery in Nanaimo North Town Centre mall.
