Nanaimo-Info-blog: Public Open House May 2

Public Open House May 2

Proposed Harewood Centennial ParkPlans to be PresentedHarewood Centennial Park is the next City of Nanaimo park slated for updating. The neighbourhood park has been the subject of community review for the past twelve months and the next step is a second public open house session on Wednesday, May 2. Residents are invited to review the proposed plans from 6-9pm at John Barsby School in the multipurpose room (550 7th Street).

The city’s Parks Recreation and Culture Commission members are interested in hearing more feedback on the draft plans and ideas for additional improvements to be included as the plan moves forward. Information boards, a community survey, and a schematic park improvement plan will be available at the open house. The materials will also be made available online at www.nanaimo.ca and can be emailed to anyone interested who cannot attend.

Harewood Centennial Park is a destination for many residents of South Nanaimo and has great potential to be a large community gathering space and recreation hub. In recent years several groups have approached the City asking for improvements to the park including a covered area for lacrosse and other sports and a skate park. In addition, residents have asked for aesthetic improvements to the Parks Operations Harewood yard.

The initial 2011 public open house and survey results have helped to form a clear vision for the park’s future. Over 100 people attended the first open house and/or gave feedback through the online survey. In addition to the broad community input gathering, 66 students from John Barsby participated in a park visioning process. Feedback indicated that park users share a desire for a safe environment that appeals to all ages.
